Gov. Jan Brewer endorses Michele Regan for secretary of state

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday endorsed state Sen. Michele Reagan in her bid to become the Republican nominee in secretary of state's race, saying the chairman of the Senate Elections Committee is best prepared to be the state's chief elections officer.

The governor cited Reagan's commitment to election transparency and fairness in choosing to back her from among the three Republicans in the August primary.

``She is a person that is a truth-teller. She is honest, and she has integrity,'' Brewer said. ``Bottom line is, she believes in transparency, and she believes voters deserve to have an open, public election, that their votes are counted correctly and that they're done properly.''

The secretary of state is Arizona's top elections officer and also becomes governor if there's a midterm vacancy in that office.

Reagan is facing state Rep. Justin Pierce and businessman Will Cardon in the Aug. 26 primary. The winner takes on Democrat Terry Goddard in the November general election. Incumbent Ken Bennett is running for governor.

Brewer endorsed Mark Brnovich in the GOP race for attorney general last week over incumbent Tom Horne.

The value of endorsements is often overstated, but Brewer's carry great weight in Arizona because she's a popular Republican governor. She promised to campaign for Reagan.

``I will be out on the trail promoting Michele Reagan hot and heavy,'' Brewer said.

Brewer also served as secretary of state and became governor in 2009 when Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano resigned to become Homeland Security secretary.

``I truly believe that Michele is the only candidate for secretary that if, God forbid, something happens to the governor, that is able to step up and fill those shoes,'' Brewer said.
