SANDPOINT, Idaho -- A 24-year-old Arizona man armed with a semiautomatic AK-47 rifle and another rifle fired at police before officers returned fire and took him into custody.
Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler Wheeler said Wednesday that evidence showed Marcus Anthony Rael of Glendale fired both weapons during the June 22 exchange on Interstate 90. Police had initially attempted to pull him over for suspected drunk driving.
Police said Rael fled but crashed in Post Falls at a police roadblock, where he exchanged gunfire with 12 officers.
Rael was charged with felony eluding law enforcement. Additional charges are possible.
Rael was being held in the Kootenai County Jail on $1 million bail.
