FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said one of its deputies fatally shot a Fountain Hills man who was naked when he opened the officer's patrol car and tried to take his gun.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said 26-year-old David Brandstetter was first reported walking in traffic shortly before the shooting and was later spotted by the officer in question as Brandstetter was in a neighborhood.
Brandstetter opened the patrol car when the deputy stopped to talk to him, punched the officer, tried to put the vehicle into drive and attempted to take away the officer's gun.
The officer then shot Brandstetter, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arpaio said it's unknown whether Brandstetter was intoxicated or had psychological problems.
Investigators are awaiting toxicology test results for Brandstetter.
Arpaio said the officer is expected to return to patrol duty Tuesday.
The sheriff's office said Brandstetter was an air-conditioning technician who had a wife, three kids and had served in the U.S. Army.
There was no listed phone number for Brandstetter's home.
