PHOENIX -- An 8-year-old boy was fatally injured when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike through a Phoenix intersection.

Phoenix police say Richard Vejar failed to stop for a stop sign before he was hit Wednesday night.

The boy's family says he was trying to catch up to an ice cream truck to get a treat for his younger brother.

According to police, the 37-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle remained at the scene and impairment doesn't appear to have been a factor in the accident.

The name of the woman hasn't been released.
