SEDONA, Ariz. -- A portion of the highway through Oak Creek Canyon is open again after being closed because of flooding.

The Department of Transportation said the section of State Route 89A near the switchbacks north of Sedona reopened Sunday after crews removed debris from the roadway.

Oak Creek is near the burn scar left from the Slide Fire, a human-caused blaze that charred more than 33 square miles before being contained last month. Campgrounds and recreation sites in the canyon were already closed due to flood danger.

ADOT urged travelers to use State Route 179 or Interstate 17 as alternatives during the closure.
