PHOENIX -- Dozens of law enforcement officers responded when a Phoenix police officer called for urgent assistance as he fought with a suspect next to a freeway off-ramp.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the officer was fighting with a man who had been taken into custody for allegedly trespassing at a store Wednesday.

Thompson said the officer exited State Route 51 south at Glendale Avenue when the suspect drooped to the floor in the back of the patrol car. The fight began when the man burst from the car when the office went to check on him.

Several motorists stopped to help before other officers arrived.

The officer and the man have bruises and scrapes. The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
