PHOENIX -- A 9-year-old boy shot early Wednesday morning during a hunting accident west of Phoenix has died, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

The boy was with two people in their early 20s and a pair of 15-year-olds near 363rd and Durango avenues in Tonopah. He was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his neck and later succumbed to his injuries. The shot was fired about 5 a.m.

According to an initial investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the boy may have been hit by a bullet from a handgun that ricocheted off a rock.

No charges have been filed.
