PEORIA, Ariz. -- Three people are hospitalized in critical condition after being injured during a fire in a Peoria town house.

Fire officials say the three people shut themselves in a bathroom and used wet towels to try to keep smoke from entering during the fire late Sunday night.

They called 911 and told the dispatcher where they'd taken refuge, but they weren't responsive when firefighters got them out.

The victims are described as a young man and two young women.

The fire caved in the townhouse's roof, and another town house also was badly damaged. Six other units had smoke or fire damage.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
