PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say a 17-year-old girl who drove an SUV that hit a block wall in an accident that injured her and two young children has been detained on suspicion of aggravated assault and other crimes.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson says the girl was sent to a juvenile detention center after being released late Sunday from a hospital where she was treated for injuries suffered in the accident late Friday.

Thompson says the incident began when police took the girl into custody after she returned to an SUV in which two boys were left unattended.

According to Thompson, the girl drove off after managing to get one hand out of handcuffs and allegedly striking an officer with her fist. The accident then occurred several blocks away.

Both boys remain hospitalized.
