PHOENIX -- A portion of a freeway north of Phoenix was closed for nearly nine hours after an oil tanker rolled over.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials said the tanker truck rolled onto its side around 4 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 about 35 miles north of Phoenix.

State Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the driver drifted toward another truck and overcorrected, but he suffered only minor injuries.

KTVK-TV reports as much as 500 gallons of used motor oil may have spilled.

The northbound lanes of I-17 near the accident scene were reopened about 1 p.m.

ADOT officials said the extended closure was needed to remove the tanker and for a hazardous materials crew to remove spilled oil from the road.
