PHOENIX -- Authorities are investigating a dog attack in Phoenix that left injured a 6-year-old boy.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control officials say the attack occurred about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The victim apparently was visiting a home and playing in the backyard.

Authorities say the male Pitbull mix entered through an open gate and attacked the child.

The dog reportedly doesn't belong to the family or the occupants of the home.

The child was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor bites to his head and hands.

Authorities say the dog didn't have a collar or identification tags and is being scanned for a microchip at an animal control center.

It is being held at the facility on bite quarantine, where it will be monitored for any signs of rabies.
