MESA, Ariz. -- A fire has caused extensive damage to a church in Mesa and authorities still are trying to determine its cause.
The two-alarm blaze broke out about 9 a.m. Thursday at New Life Assembly of God church, which has been part of the community for about 60 years.
Fire department crews from Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert all responded to the scene and more than 100 firefighters battled the flames.
The only person inside when the fire ignited reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the air-conditioning unit.
Mesa Fire Department investigators are looking into whether an electric malfunction caused the fire.
There were no reported injuries.
Authorities said the church suffered extensive fire and smoke damage, but no dollar estimate was immediately available.
