PHOENIX -- Northern Arizona University announced that Rita Cheng was approved Wednesday as president of the 26,000-student school.

She was scheduled to start mid-August.

Cheng has been chancellor of Southern Illinois University's 18,000-student Carbondale campus since 2010.

She will succeed John Haeger, who is stepping down next year to focus on teaching.

SIU President Randy Dunn said that at least for now, Cheng will stay into next month.
