GILBERT, Ariz. -- An off-duty police officer crashed his vehicle into a Gilbert church, authorities said.

Gilbert police said the officer was driving his three children, 4, 5, and 7, Wednesday around 10 a.m. when his SUV slammed into Victory Tabernacle Pentecostal Church.

Police spokesman Jesse Sanger said the officer, whose identity was not released, suffered a medical episode.

Two people who were nearby helped get the children, who were not hurt, and the driver out of the car.

Sanger said the officer was taken to a hospital. No one in the church was injured.

The 29-year-old officer is a six-year veteran of the Gilbert Police Department.
