Pinal County reports its 1st West Nile case of year

FLORENCE, Ariz. -- Health officials said Pinal County has its first human case of West Nile virus this year.

It's also believed to be the first West Nile case in Arizona this year.

Pinal Public Health Services District officials said a Casa Grande man is recovering. No other information about the victim was released Friday.

Health officials said they usually don't start seeing West Nile cases until early July.

The virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

It can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to severe neurological symptoms.

Horses also are susceptible to the virus.

Last year, there were two confirmed West Nile cases in Pinal County.

Around the state, authorities say there were 62 confirmed cases last year with six fatalities.
