PHOENIX -- Authorities said a boy was saved from nearly drowning in a Phoenix swimming pool thanks to an alert neighbor.

Local TV news reported the 3-year-old child got out of a unit at the Palmera Apartments near 19th and Northern avenues around 3 a.m.

Police said the sound of the child splashing in the complex pool woke up a man in a nearby apartment. He found the toddler floating, pulled the boy out and yelled for help.

Another resident administered CPR until firefighters arrived.

The boy was conscious and breathing while being taken to a hospital.

Police are investigating how the child made his way to the pool.
