GILBERT, Ariz. -- A Gilbert man has died a day after being stunned by police with a Taser.

Police spokesman John Lyle said 34-year-old Daniel Best passed away at a hospital Sunday.

According to police, officers responded to an apartment complex Saturday around 3:30 a.m. regarding an altercation between Best and his wife. Upon arriving, they said Best was nude and yelling in a courtyard.

Five officers tried to detain Best after he fought and assaulted them by trying to deploy a Taser several times. It's not clear how many times Best was shocked.

He began showing signs of medical distress while in custody.

Investigators said they believe cocaine was a factor in Best's behavior.

The cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.
