PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say a woman is facing a manslaughter charge for allegedly driving drunk, causing a man's death in a collision Saturday morning.

Police spokesman James Holmes said 33-year-old Michelle Nicole Ayers was speeding in a Chevy Blazer on Cactus Road near 40th Street around 1:30 a.m. when she rear-ended a Ford Expedition.

Holmes said the Expedition went off the road and struck a block wall and a tree.

He said the Expedition driver, 47-year-old Christopher James Kutcher, was critically injured and later pronounced dead.

Authorities said Ayers showed signs of impairment. Preliminary tests show she had a blood-alcohol level that was more than three times the legal limit.

Ayers has since been booked on one count of manslaughter. It was not immediately known if she had an attorney.
