PHOENIX -- The city of Phoenix, led by Democratic Mayor Greg Stanton, apparently is determined to host a major political convention ahead of the 2016 general election.

According to POLITICO reporter James Hohmann, Phoenix is one of six cities that has submitted a bid to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016.

In February, Phoenix was on a short list to hold the Republican National Convention, but by early April, CNN reported Arizona's capital was out of the running to be the host city.

Charlotte, N.C, was the site of the last DNC, which helped propel President Barack Obama to re-election in 2012.
