Arizona man claims 'dream police' told him to kill mother

KINGMAN, Ariz. -- A northwestern Arizona man who told authorities the ``dream police'' ordered him to kill his mother has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in her beating and stabbing death.

Roger Drake, 47, of Yucca, entered the plea Tuesday in Mohave County Superior Court, the Kingman Daily Miner reported.

Doctors who examined Drake following the 2013 killing of 66-year-old Carol Drake found he was insane at the time, but he has since been restored to competency.

Judge Derek Carlisle advised him that he could plead guilty but insane, but Drake turned down the option that would have put him in the care of a state psychiatry board and the state mental hospital.

Defense attorney Ron Gileo said Drake wanted to go to prison, not the mental hospital.

Drake told Carlisle that the medications he takes in jail make him ``calm and relaxed'' and that he has no problems thinking clearly.

In interviews with sheriff's detectives, Drake had acknowledged killing his mother, saying the ``dream police'' told him to do so.

When sentenced June 30, Drake will get a 21-year prison term under a plea agreement that drops a first-degree murder charge.
