PHOENIX — Longtime TV journalist Robin Roberts has been chosen to receive the Walter Cronkite Award from Arizona State University, it was announced Wednesday.

Roberts will be honored at a luncheon in downtown Phoenix on Oct. 6.

The “Good Morning America” co-anchor also tweeted that she was “honored & can’t wait to get to ASU.”

Roberts’ career started in radio, then made the jump to television, where she eventually landed at ESPN.

The former college basketball star joined “Good Morning America” in 2005. During her tenure she has twice been diagnosed with cancer — myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood cancer in 2012, and breast cancer in 2005.

Roberts was open about her medical battle, announcing the latest diagnosis on-air.

Past winners of the award include Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer, Bob Woodward and Tom Brokaw.
