Phoenix leaders want $175,000 plan approved to improve ties with Mexico

PHOENIX — Members of the Phoenix’s downtown, aviation and redevelopment subcommittee will be asked this week to approve a $175,000 plan to improve relationships and strengthen economic ties between Arizona’s capital and Mexico.
The proposal calls for $75,000 to support a trade office that the Arizona Commerce Authority plans to open in Mexico City and as much as $100,000 on consultants to identify and support opportunities for Phoenix companies.
According to a city report, the overall goals include improving the Valley’s image and reputation in Mexico and presenting Phoenix and its partners as trustworthy and collaborative.
Although Mexico is Arizona’s top trade partner, the report says Arizona and the Phoenix metro area rank below other competing markets when it comes to cross-border flow, bilateral trade and foreign investment.
