PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Authorities say phone scammers are impersonating Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says a resident reported receiving a call from someone identifying himself as "Sgt. Michael Barnsworth."

The caller allegedly told the victim she had two misdemeanor warrants for failure to comply with a jury summons.

Authorities say a second caller, who identified himself as "Lt. Jeff Johnson," instructed the victim to purchase nearly $1,000 worth of debit cards and arrange payment over the telephone.

The caller allegedly told the victim she would be arrested if she contacted law enforcement.

Officials say similar incidents have been reported to Prescott police and an investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff's deputies say anyone receiving calls such as these should immediately notify a law enforcement agency.
