PHOENIX -- The U.S. Consulate General in Nogales, Mexico, has reissued travel warnings after an American citizen was murdered there last weekend.

Citing multiple and ongoing credible threats, the Consulate General on Tuesday repeated warnings against unnecessary travel in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and surrounding areas.

The Consulate first issued a public caution May 25, one day before a Tucson man was murdered in Nogales.

A spokeswoman said the U.S. Department of State was aware of the death of an American citizen in Mexico over the weekend and said officials were working with Mexican authorities on the case. Mexican media have identified the man as 25-year-old Jorge Luis Soto of Tucson.

Soto was one of five people murdered in a particularly violent weekend in Nogales.
