TEMPE - Construction of the new Tempe Town Lake western dam system will begin on June 4.

The new project will consist of a steel gate system to let Town Lake to change into a river during major events.

Tempe Town Lake will be extended an additional 100 feet. The project will take 18 months to complete.

The cost of the project will be approximately $40.8 million, which will make it the largest hydraulically-operated steel gate dam system in the world.

Each of the eight steel gates will be mounted on a concrete foundation and will measure 107 feet long and 17 feet high. Each will weigh approximately 230,000 pounds.
