Mary Rose Wilcox to run for congressional seat

PHOENIX -- Mary Rose Wilcox has resigned from the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors so she can run for Congress.

She submitted a one-sentence letter Friday for her resignation, effective on May 27.

Wilcox will run in the upcoming Democratic primary against former state Rep. Ruben Gallego for the seat in Arizona's 7th Congressional District, left vacant by retiring U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor.

The 64-year-old has been on the Board of Supervisors since 1993 representing the fifth district, which spans from downtown Phoenix to the western and southern borders of Maricopa County. It includes south Phoenix, Buckeye, the Gila River Indian Community and Gila Bend.

Board Chairman Denny Barney called Friday for applications for the open supervisor's position.

The remaining board members will appoint an interim replacement.
