PHOENIX -- A Phoenix teenager is facing charges after a child he was babysitting was injured last weekend and later died.

Phoenix police say the 16-year-old boy's name isn't being released at this time.

They say the teen originally was arrested Sunday on suspicion of child abuse and the 5-year-old boy died Wednesday.

Police were called Sunday night to Phoenix Children's Hospital after the victim's mother says she found her son unresponsive in bed after she got home from work.

The child was airlifted to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

The teen's father is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

Police say the boy allegedly got upset at the 5-year-old and pushed him to the ground, knocking the child unconscious.

The teen was taken to the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center.
