MESA, Ariz. -- A man exchanged gunfire with Mesa police Monday night, after refusing to put down his weapon.

Police said the man was shot by at least one officer after he fired a gun at them.

Detective Steve Berry said the officers found the man in a parking lot behind a mostly empty strip mall after getting a call about a man with a gun.

No officers were injured in the shooting near McKellips Road and Stapley Drive.

The man's injuries were not life-threatening. His name was not released.
