Prescott cuts Hotshot crew jobs for now

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Prescott officials are eliminating the city's remaining elite firefighter positions that were held by Granite Mountain Hotshots who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire last year.

The Daily Courier reported the city released its proposal Thursday to eliminate six full-time Hotshot crew jobs.

The city said it will add three fuel technician positions.

The decision comes as the Prescott City Council deliberates on a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts July 1.

City Manager Craig McConnell said no decision has been made on whether the Hotshot crew will eventually be replaced. He also said increasing fuels reduction work will benefit public safety.

Acting Prescott Fire Chief Dave Essex declined to comment.

Nineteen Prescott-based firefighters, including full-time Hotshots and 13 seasonal crew members, perished in the fire June 30.
