Pinal County officials debate use of seized money

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Members of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors and Sheriff Paul Babeu are at odds over how his office uses some of the money that it gets from seizures made under an anti-racketeering law.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reported that supervisors and Babeu discussed the issue during a meeting Wednesday.

Supervisors said it could help the financially struggling county if Babeu used more of the money for training and equipment for deputies instead of donating to organizations such as youth groups.

Babeu responded that he does use the money on supplies and technology for law enforcement, but he also defended giving money to youth groups. He said it helps keeps kids out of trouble, and that the county should adequately fund his department.
