PHOENIX -- Arizona Sen. Michele Reagan has filed nominating petitions to run as a Republican in the race for secretary of state.
Reagan filed more than 8,000 qualifying signatures Thursday to quality her for August's primary. She is running with private funding and needed about 5,600 valid signatures.
The state lawmaker becomes the first Republican to officially file for the ballot. Other announced GOP candidates include businessman Wil Cardon and state Rep. Justin Pierce.
Former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is running as a Democrat and filed his nominating petitions late last month.
Candidates have until May 28 to file.
The secretary of state in Arizona is the state's top election officer and also becomes governor if there's a midterm vacancy in that office. Arizona does not have a lieutenant governor.
