YUMA, Ariz. -- Authorities say a body found in a canal in Mexico has been identified as a Winterhaven man reported missing last month.

Officials with the Imperial County Sheriff's Office in Winterhaven say the body is that of 46-year-old Thomas Alvarez, who was last seen by his family on April 1.

Alvarez's vehicle also was found abandoned in Winterhaven, near the Arizona-California border.

Mexican authorities say they located Alvarez's body last weekend in a canal in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora.

The Yuma Sun reports that Alvarez's death is under investigation.
