PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say two people are in critical condition after their vehicle crashed on an interstate off-ramp.

Police said a driver and passenger had to be extricated from a Chevy pickup truck after the 4 a.m. crash near 43rd Avenue and the I-10.

Sgt. Steve Martos said the truck was traveling on I-17 and then headed westbound on I-10 at a high speed.

Martos said officers followed the vehicle for a time and then came in contact with it again.

According to police, the truck slammed into the barricade while trying to negotiate a left turn.

Police believe speed was a factor.

Martos said both occupants, believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, suffered severe burns.

Police said the crash area was temporary closed.
