PHOENIX -- Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery of an armored car in Phoenix last week.

Phoenix police said 34-year-old Lonnie D. Smith and another man approached two guards while they were working at an ATM on Friday.

The armed men tried to steal money from the guards before one of the guards opened fire.

Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital, but the other man escaped and remained at large.

Police said they found a large rifle under a car at the scene and it may have belonged to the other suspect.
