Gov. Jan Brewer OKs bill letting attorney general defend SB1070 subpoenas

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Attorney General can fight subpoenas issued in a civil case seeking to get the remainder of the state's 2010 immigration law thrown out under a bill signed by Gov. Jan brewer.

Brewer signed Senate Bill 1221 on Friday. It allows the attorney general to defend state employees if they are not a party to a lawsuit but served with a civil subpoena.

The bill sponsored by Senate President Andy Biggs was prompted by subpoenas issued by the American Civil Liberties Union in a case seeking to overturn SB1070.

The governor signed a bill in January provided $100,000 to hire private lawyers to fight subpoenas issued to current and former lawmakers about their SB1070 communications.

Biggs called the subpoenas a fishing expedition designed to harass members who supported SB 1070.
