PHOENIX — Police talked down a suicidal man on a Loop 101 overpass Friday, ending an hourslong standoff that snarled traffic for morning commuters.
Negotiations with the man took several hours and resulted in the closure of the freeway in both directions. At one point, traffic was backed up for more than five miles.
At one point, traffic cameras showed vehicles turning around on the southbound Loop 101 to exit the freeway.
Eastbound Thomas Road at Pima Road and ramps from both the eastbound and westbound Loop 202 to the northbound Loop 101 were also closed, but later reopened.
Police tweeted the suicidal man would seek help.
