Gov. Jan Brewer expands Arizona school-voucher program
PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law two bills that expand eligibility to the state's school voucher program.
Brewer signed House bills 2139 and 2150 Wednesday.
HB 2139 expands eligibility to siblings of students who already participate in the program. It also opens the program to students who are eligible for preschool programs for children with disabilities but who have not attended a public school. Currently, students must first attend public school before enrolling.
The Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Accounts program allows students to use public funds for a private education and other educational needs.
HB2150 opens eligibility to children whose parent was killed in the line of duty while in the military.
The program began in 2011 for children with disabilities but has since been expanded to students from poor-performing schools.
