PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man accused of stabbing his mother nine times with a kitchen knife said God told him to do it.

Bail was set at $500,000 for 18-year-old Cory Kit Montgomery at his initial court appearance Thursday.

Montgomery was arrested early Monday near 35th Street and McDowell Road on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and resisting arrest.

Witnesses told police that they saw Montgomery stab the victim multiple times while she yelled out that she loved her son.

Police said they later found the knife in a parking lot near the area where the attack occurred.

The woman was taken to a Phoenix hospital for treatment of nonfatal stab wounds.
