Lawyers in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's profiling case face deadline

PHOENIX -- Lawyers in a racial profiling case against the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office face a Thursday deadline to produce accurate summary of the case's key rulings.

The summary is required by U.S. District Judge Murray Snow after Sheriff Joe Arpaio and a top aide mischaracterized some of the court's decisions in an October training session with rank-and-file officers.

Snow ordered lawyers on both sides to summarize his rulings and put those statements in a letter that Arpaio and his aide will sign and give to all sheriff's employees.

Ten months ago, Snow concluded that Arpaio's office systematically racially profiled Latinos in its immigration and regular traffic patrols and unreasonably prolonged the detentions of people during traffic stops.

Arpaio disputed the racial profiling ruling and has appealed it.
