MCSO: Boy's abduction story in Phoenix is a hoax

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Authorities say 12-year-old boy who said two people tried to abduct him at a Phoenix bus stop made up the story.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials announced Monday afternoon that the attempted kidnapping is a hoax, but no charges will be filed.

"I don't believe we'll charge anybody," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Maybe it's best that this is left up to the parents and they can address this situation better."

Arpaio also said the boy has a problem with staying home alone.

"I'm not blaming the parents," Arpaio said. "They just left the house and then the boy was supposed to leave, as he always does, to be picked up by the school bus and...just made up the story that he was kidnapped."

MCSO deputies said the boy earlier told authorities that he was walking to the bus stop outside the gate of the Russell Ranch community around 8 a.m. on Phoenix's west side.

The boy says a knife-wielding suspect attempted to get him into a gray pickup driven by a second suspect.

The boy wasn't injured and he ran home and called 911, which triggered a search for the supposed suspects.
