PHOENIX -- A man punched and kicked a hole in an apartment wall so he and his girlfriend could escape a fire.

Fire Capt. Tony Mure said the couple tried to open the door but saw flames. They shut the door and realized the only window was too small to climb through.

According to Mure, the 26-year-old man punched and kicked the wall so he and his 21-year-old girlfriend could get out Sunday night.

The man had minor injuries to one hand from punching the wall. He refused to be transported to the hospital. His name wasn't released.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
