YUMA, Ariz. -- Authorities in Yuma say a Pennsylvania teenager is dead after the car he was riding in crashed into a canal.

Yuma County Sheriff's Office spokesman Alfonso Zavala said 21-year-old Colton Garrett Whiteside, of Chillicothe, Mo., was driving northeast Friday just after 10 p.m. in a Chevrolet pickup truck when it went off an access road.

Zavala said the pickup went toward the right and into the Gila Gravity Canal, where it became submerged.

Zavala said Rural Metro Fire crews transported Whiteside and 19-year-old Kurt Allen Schenker, of Erie, Penn., for medical treatment.

He said Schenker was later pronounced dead at the hospital and Whiteside was treated and released.

Authorities said alcohol appears to be a contributing factor.

Zavala did not say if Whiteside faces any charges.
