BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- Authorities have arrested a Buckeye woman after several horses on her property were found sick and malnourished.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said 59-year-old Denise Denney was booked into jail Thursday on 13 counts of animal abuse.
Arpaio said detectives served a search warrant on Denney's home on March 12.
They found nine horses with overgrown hooves and teeth that were filed down, making it impossible to chew food.
Deputies also found a 2-year-old Clydesdale that was at least 700 pounds underweight.
Jail inmates were caring for two of the horses and the other seven will be transported there.
