PHOENIX — The driver of a stolen pickup truck that collided with a van
carrying a pregnant woman in Phoenix is facing second-degree murder charges
after the unborn child died.
Phoenix police said 31-year-old Michael Angelo DeLaCruz also is being held on
suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury and
aggravated assault.
DeLaCruz was arrested after the crash early Thursday. His bond was set at
$150,000 at his initial court appearance Friday and he doesn’t have a lawyer
yet.
Police said the woman was 27 weeks pregnant and the child died of complications.
DeLaCruz told police he had been using methamphetamines all day. He tried to
steal another car and escape the crash scene because he was on parole and had a
felony warrant for his arrest.
