SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say they've arrested a woman in the town of Surprise for alleged animal abuse.

Sheriff's officials said Wednesday that an adult female dog was found severely emaciated and suffering from an acute case of dermatitis over most of her body.

They say the dog's skin was bleeding and crusting and she had edema and tick fever.

Sheriff's officials say the animal belongs to 62-year-old Lucila C. Tellez.

They say Tellez is being held on suspicion of one count each of animal cruelty and failure to provide necessary medical attention.

Officials say the dog has received veterinary treatment and is under the care of the sheriff's MASH Unit.

The unit was established to nurse neglected animals back to health so they can be adopted.
