TUCSON, Ariz. -- Officials at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson say a male Grevy's zebra has died in an accident.

They say the zebra named Ajani was 19 months old and was born at the zoo.

Zoo officials say the death occurred Monday morning during the preparation for routine, required vaccinations.

Shortly after being separated from the rest of the herd, Ajani was suddenly startled by another zebra in an adjacent area and ran into the normal enclosure barrier and suffered a fractured neck.

Officials say the incident occurred in an interior area of the exhibit not visible to the public.

Zoo keepers witnessed the accident and the veterinary team immediately performed CPR in attempts to revive the zebra.

An X-ray on site revealed the physical trauma to the vertebrae wasn't survivable.
