UA dean releases statement on Tucson riot

PHOENIX — The University of Arizona released a statement Monday after a portion of downtown Tucson was taken over by a riot over the weekend.
The statement, from U of A’s Dean of Students Kendal Washington, is printed in full below and has not been altered in any way.
It is disappointing that a minority of Wildcat fans chose to engage in behavior that does not reflect the culture of the University of Arizona and Tucson communities. Our basketball team had a great season and they exhibited exceptional class at every turn. They do not deserve the bad actions of these others. As with all incidents, university students engaged in behavior that violates our Student Code of Conduct will be held accountable.
The university is grateful for the efforts of UAPD and Tucson Police Department to maintain order in our community.
The riot was touched off after U of A’s basketball team lost to Wisconsin in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Fifteen arrests were made in total. Of the 15, all were misdemeanors and only one was actually booked in Pima County Jail.
