PHOENIX -- Authorities say a man is in custody after allegedly assaulting his wife and then barricading himself in a Phoenix apartment for hours.

Phoenix police say the man in his 60s surrendered about 3 p.m. Monday and was arrested.

They say he's being booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

The name of the man hasn't been released yet.

Police were called to the apartment near Bell Road and 58 Street about 9:40 a.m. in response to a fight.

They say woman in her 60s had facial injuries and told police that she was assaulted by her husband who was still inside the apartment. Her name wasn't immediately released.

Police say the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment and the barricade situation began when the man refused to come out of the apartment.
