Arizona Senate postpones budget debate until Tuesday

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Senate has postponed plans to debate a House of Representatives-approved budget of more than $9 billion that was the cause of a nearly weeklong standoff between conservative and moderate factions of the Republican party.

The Senate was scheduled to debate parts of the House-passed budget that added $54 million in spending to the Senate budget.

But a Senate committee on Monday reduced some of those expenditures. Other parts, such as a $33 million addition to keep district charter schools open another year, were not discussed by the committee. Those changes will be reviewed separately.

Senate President Andy Biggs said Monday that senators needed more time to make amendments to the House-passed budget. The Senate will meet on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
