PHOENIX -- Bond is set at $50,000 for a Phoenix man accused of punching his girlfriend several times and leaving her with a broken jaw and nose.

Phoenix police said 38-year-old Hassan Kevin Corbin was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Corbin had his initial court appearance Friday. He doesn't have a lawyer yet and is facing an April 7 preliminary hearing.

Police said neighbors reported hearing a man yelling death threats from inside an apartment and then saw a woman severe facial wounds telling for help.

Police said Corbin later told them the assault was in self-defense because the woman had pulled his hair.
